 Scouting for Martian Molecules
Rovers Mars Scout finalists are this week's selections for the Extreme Explorers' Hall of Fame.

 The ERA Rover Class
Rovers The Extra Vehicular Activity Robotic Assistant (ERA) rover is like a work crew without a foreman. Its research directives include tandem exploration either with other robots or humans.

Galileo Flyby: Extreme Explorers Hall of Fame
Rovers The Jupiter probe, Galileo, is this week's selection for the Extreme Explorers Hall of Fame. In the next ten days, the robotic spacecraft flies within 100 miles of the unusual moon, Amalthea, which gives off more heat than it receives. As Galileo has filled its mission objectives and is running low on maneuvering fuel, NASA plans to crash the spacecraft into Jupiter during 2003.

 Hot Camera Points to Mars
Rovers With temperature-sensitive detectors, views of martian geography have revealed a dramatic, environmentally changing landscape. Some of the best evidence found so far for a possible watery past, in fact, is now visual, and comes from high overhead in orbit above the Red Planet.

August of Wind: Storm Chasing on the Red Planet
Rovers On August 8th, a rare Mars Orbital Camera image was released actually capturing a dust devil in the act of creating a streak as it climbed an embankment out of a crater. The photo gives pause: what kind of extreme conditions might a sensitive scientific instrument encounter on the Red Planet? It's just the sort of question posed by a storm-chasing group of scientists who conduct a test suite named Project Matador.

NASA Astrobiology Architect, Dr. Gerald Soffen, Remembered
Rovers NASA Scientist Dr. Gerald Soffen, who led the Viking science team that performed the first experiments on the surface of the planet Mars and a key architect of the Astrobiology Institute, is fondly remembered.

 The Viking Files
Rovers Three expeditions to the surface of Mars have succeeded so far: the two Viking probes in the 1970s and Mars Pathfinder in 1997. As that total is expected to double with planned launches next month (2 NASA/1 ESA probe), scientists have periodically revisited what it might take for life detection to become part of future experimental profiles. The Viking examples however show this not to be a scientific case of 'add-water-and-stir'.

 Return to the Red Planet
Rovers On Saturday, April 7, NASA's next mission to Mars is set to launch. The 2001 Mars Odyssey will investigate the history of water on the Red Planet.
